Art through the Ages

Milan is not just a city of fashion, design and businessmen, but also a major center of art .

The number of churches that exhibit treasures from roman times till the 19th or even 20th century (the doors of the Duomo ) is endless. Just to mention a few highlights: Sant'Ambrogio , Sant'Eustorgio , San Maurizo .

Add the museums, some of very recent date ( Novecento, Gallerie d'Italia ) and the modern art exhibition galleries (often housed in former industrial complexes) like the Asab One , Spazio FORMA and Hangar Bicocca and you have a wealth of things to see and admire. A major open air sculpture museum is the Cimitero Monumentale .

With respect to the collection of Renaissance paintings and frescoes, Milan can boast to be second only to Florence in Italy. Major venues in this respect are the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Poldi Pezzoli museum .

Just south of Milan lies the Certosa di Pavia monastery, one of the major sights to visit in the whole of Lombardy. The cities of Pavia and Cremona host several very interesting churches as well.
